Trail cameras

In order to monitor what is going in and out of the Hedgehog nest box that didn't have a camera in it we bought a trail camera. We bought a Browning Recon Force Edge as it seemed to get good reviews. It has a 20MP Camera, and supports video capture at 1920 x 1080 Full HD @ 60fps. The only problem we had with the camera was the fact that it has a fixed focus that is about 1.5 metres. This was no good for observing the Hedgehog nest boxes. We then bought a Bushnell NatureView HD which has closeup lenses that can be added on to the front of the camera which will focus at 460mm. We now use the Browning Recon Force Edge to monitor activity on our lawn.

As you can see from the pictures above the Trail camera came with a large strap which is great for strapping it to a large tree. However it was just a bit of a pain to getit in the correct position and the correct angle. It was also a pain to untie and retie up every day when we went out to check the trail camera for any videos that it may have captured. We decided that we needed a much easier and more convenient way of attaching the trail camera.

Trail camera mount

Our solution was a old GoPro helmet mount which I drilled a couple of countersunk holes in it so that it could be easily screwed onto a post. Fortunately at the bottom of the trail camera there is a standard 1/4 inch tripod mount. So with a GoPro tripod mount added in it makes it easy to adjust the up and down angle and the side to side movement. I cut off the two little clips on the GoPro helmet mount so it is now so easy to just slide it on and off the mount to check the camera.
